The Embrace Journal: Guide to Diamonds
Unlock the secrets of cut, color, clarity, and carat—your path to choosing the perfect diamond.
The Language of Light
Diamonds are not just beautiful—they are a reflection of quality and precision. At Embrace Diamonds, the 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat—are the key factors that determine a diamond’s value. In this guide, we’ll break down how each of these elements affects a diamond’s appearance and price, empowering you to make an informed and meaningful choice in your search for the perfect stone.
Cut
The Key to Diamond Brilliance
Why Cut Matters?
The cut of a diamond is the most critical factor influencing its brilliance and sparkle. Unlike the other 3Cs, cut is a human-made attribute, determined by the proportions, symmetry, and polish of the diamond. An excellent cut allows light to enter the diamond and reflect back in a way that maximizes brilliance.
GIA Cut Grading
The GIA grades diamonds based on their cut quality, with five possible ratings:
- Excellent: The highest grade, where the diamond achieves ideal proportions and optimal light performance.
- Very Good: Close to excellent, with slight compromises in proportions that still allow for good brilliance.
- Good: A functional cut, but with noticeable light leakage and reduced brilliance.
- Fair: Offers reduced sparkle, and may have visible issues in symmetry and proportions.
Poor: Light performance is significantly compromised, and the diamond lacks brilliance.
Triple Excellent Cut
A Triple Excellent grade from GIA signifies that the diamond has excellent cut, excellent symmetry, and excellent polish. These diamonds are the most brilliant, offering maximum light performance and stunning visual appeal. At Embrace Diamonds, we prioritize these top-tier cuts to guarantee brilliance and beauty in every piece.
Color
The Color Scale
Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The closer a diamond is to colorless, the higher its value because it allows the most light to pass through. Diamonds in the D-F range offer the highest quality, while G-J diamonds are near-colorless, balancing quality and value.
Grading Color
- D-F (Colorless): These diamonds reflect the most light and are considered the rarest and most valuable.
- G-J (Near Colorless): These diamonds offer excellent value and still appear colorless to the naked eye, making them a popular choice for many buyers.
- K-M (Faint): Diamonds in this range may have a visible yellowish tint. They are priced lower but can still be a good choice for those seeking more affordable options.
Embrace Diamonds Color Selection
At Embrace Diamonds, we focus on D-J color diamonds, ensuring each piece shines brightly with minimal visible color. Whether you select a colorless diamond or a near-colorless one, we guarantee a stunning balance of quality and beauty.
Clarity
What Is Clarity?
Clarity refers to the internal and external imperfections found in a diamond. These natural inclusions and blemishes are often microscopic and are formed during the diamond’s creation process. The fewer the inclusions, the more light can pass through, enhancing the diamond’s brilliance and sparkle.
GIA Clarity Grading
GIA uses a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1, I2, I3). Here’s what these terms mean:
- Flawless (FL): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare.
- Internally Flawless (IF): No inclusions visible under 10x magnification, but there may be very minor surface blemishes.
- Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1-VVS2): Inclusions are very difficult to detect under 10x magnification.
- Slightly Included (SI1-SI2): Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification but not to the naked eye.
- Included (I1-I3): Inclusions are visible to the naked eye and may affect transparency and brilliance.
Choosing the Right Clarity
At Embrace Diamonds, we offer diamonds with VVS and VS clarity grades. These diamonds offer excellent value while maintaining high levels of purity, ensuring that the inclusions are either invisible to the naked eye or barely noticeable. SI clarity diamonds also offer great value and are selected for their minimal visible inclusions.
Carat Weight
Size and Presence
Understanding Carat Weight
Carat weight is the measure of a diamond’s size, but it’s not just about how large the diamond is. The size can be misleading, as the cut quality and proportions also affect how large the diamond appears. Carat weight should be considered in combination with the other 3 Cs.
Carat Weight and Perceived Size
Carat weight measures how much a diamond weighs, but the visible size (how large it looks when viewed from above) is what most people care about. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look very different because of how they’re cut.
- Spread: This is the surface area visible when you look at the diamond from above. A well-cut 1-carat diamond may appear larger than one that’s poorly cut.
- Depth: If a diamond is too deep, it can look smaller, even if it weighs more.
Carat vs. Price
Carat weight affects price, but it’s not the only determining factor. Larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive, but a well-cut, smaller diamond can appear more brilliant and have a higher value than a larger, poorly cut diamond.
At Embrace Diamonds, we carefully balance carat weight and cut quality to ensure your diamond looks both larger and more brilliant than its weight suggests. Our diamonds are cut to perfection, ensuring that even a 0.90-carat diamond can shine like a 1-carat piece.
